The VAR-DVK-DT6 and VAR-STK-DT6 Kits are compatible with Variscite DART-MX6 System on a Module (SoM), based on ARM Cortex-A9 i.MX6, with up to 800MHz CPU Clock. This miniature sized SoM, measuring only 20mm x 50mm is ideal for battery operated and portable embedded systems.

The kits provide a great showcase of the DART-MX6 connectivity features and performance and can serve as a complete development platform for both evaluation and application development purposes.

Variscite now supports a new, highly demanded feature: Boot SPL and U-Boot from USB, using the imx_usb_loader utility.

Introduction

This open-source utility software by Boundary Devices allows to download and execute code on NXP i.MX5/i.MX6/i.MX7 and Vybrid SoCs through the Serial Download Protocol (SDP).
Most commonly it is used as a replacement for NXP’s MFGTOOL to load U-Boot via the USB OTG port.

Recently, a new feature has been added to imx_loader and to U-Boot – they now support consecutive loading of SPL and U-Boot via the USB OTG port.
This new feature allows Variscite customers to enjoy the benefits of booting from USB, without missing out on the hardware modularity made possible by using SPL.

Who can benefit from this feature?

It’s worth noting that all Variscite SOMs are shipped with SPL and U-Boot pre-programmed on the SOM’s internal storage. In addition, all Variscite carrier boards have an SD card slot and allow the SOMs to be booted from an SD card (like Variscite’s recovery SD card).

Although this utility isn’t required by the majority of the Variscite customers, it provides a further method to boot Variscite’s SOMs.
A popular example of using this utility is when the customer’s board design doesn’t include an SD card slot:

  • Recovering from a ‘brick’ state (when SPL/U-Boot are accidentally removed from the SOM’s internal storage) on an end product.
  • When a customer wants to use a customized U-Boot of his own for his production process, instead of the default Variscite pre-programmed U-Boot or a customized U-Boot pre-programmed by Variscite.

Variscite is proud to reveal the new i.MX based product portfolio. The portfolio will be presented for the first time at the Embedded World 2019 exhibition & conference next week. Variscite is the only NXP partner who was granted early access to all i.MX 8 programs and will present at the exhibition next week a respectable number of new System on Modules based on i.MX 8M Mini, i.MX 8X and i.MX 8QM, as well as the i.MX 8M which was released in 2018.

Alongside the i.MX 8 platforms, we will showcase the new member to the ‘VAR-SOM pin2pin family’, the VAR-SOM-6UL platform based on i.MX 6UltraLite / 6ULL / 6ULZ processors.

DART-MX8M-MINI official launch

The official launch of the DART-MX8M-MINI System on Module (SoM) will be at the upcoming Embedded World exhibition. The DART-MX8M-MINI is a miniature SoM based on NXP’s i.MX 8M Mini processor with up to 2GHz Quad-core Cortex-A53 plus real-time 400MHz Cortex-M4 coprocessor. The SoM offers optimized power consumption, integrated HW engines supporting 1080p video encode and decode, 2D and 3D graphics, HQ audio and a wide range of connectivity options such as certified Wi-Fi/BT, Ethernet, and USB.
The DART-MX8M-MINI joins the ‘DART Pin2Pin Family’ and provides a scalable pin-compatible option to our DART-MX8M with lower power consumption and higher CPU performance. The launch of the DART-MX8M-NANO based on the upcoming i.MX 8M Nano processor is expected to take place later this year. The DART-MX8M-NANO will provide further cost/performance scalability to the ‘DART Pin2Pin Family’.
